I:__QUOTES________________________________________________

If I don’t write to empty my mind, I go mad.
– Lord Byron

To write only a poem of language, or only a poem of emotion is not enough. The two must wrestle vigorously with one another, like squirrels for a nut.
– Henri Cole

If I knew where poems came from, I’d go there.
– Michael Longley

II:__POEM OF THE MONTH__________________________________

Sometimes, what passes for silence is unacknowledged"

Terrence McLain (1951 – 2008)

Sometimes, what passes for silence is unacknowledged
chaos, the occasional ordering of indecision,
a scatter of pebbles in the riverbed.
Haunch of hill behind me, a presence,
I pause on the mud-belted belly
of the river bank slope,
toss twigs into the water’s gears
until one synchronizes—it does not tip out of sight.

III:__BOOK OF THE MONTH_________________________________

Each month we highlight a book of poetry by a Connecticut author.

THE PRICE OF WATER
by David K. Leff

David K. Leff’s first collection of poetry is a group of prose poems whose moods and subjects run the gamut from delighted description of the natural world to lament for the loss of traditional ways in our man-made world. Leff asks, for instance, if flooding townships to create reservoirs may make water a bit pricey. These poems are informed by love of small town America and regret for all it has lost. By turns lyrical, angry, and philosophical, the poems are always elegant in language, accurate in observation, and passionate in point of view. They are prefaced with an eloquent defense of the prose poem as a means of bringing the joys of poetry to readers rightly suspicious of overly ornate, obscure and academic poems posing as the real thing. Leff comes to the world of poetry as an exceptional linguist but also as a man who has worked as a newspaper essayist and a defender of the wilderness. There is a freshness to his work that is invigorating.

Dick Allen writes, “The Price of Water is a shimmering collection of prose poems/mini-essays—lush, simile-rich, image-dense close lookings at light, water, shadows, cemeteries, and all manner of other things. The poems are best read slowly, maybe one or two a day, with lingerings on each phrase and word. One of the book’s sections is ‘Always Watching,’ and that’s what Leff encourages us to do. So, with him, we savor and remember how a windy ‘harbor is herringboned with whitecaps,’ an airport is the ‘air-conditioned purgatory where no one comes to stay’ and orchids (in my favorite poem of the collection) are ‘bizarre science fiction shapes of butterflies, winging birds, and dancing women.’”

From Bruce Pratt: “In The Price of Water, David Leff has married lyric and narrative poetry and prose into a series of lush reflections and musings that entertain the heart and eye while edifying the soul. More than simply ensnaring revelatory moments, these prose poems illuminate the world through precise, acute observations in a glorious tribute to the power of words to dazzle.”

David K. Leff is a freelance writer from Collinsville, Connecticut. His essays and fiction have appeared in newspapers and magazines, and his non-fiction work, The Last Undiscovered Place, a Connecticut Book Award finalist, was published by the University of Virginia Press in 2004. A second book, Deep Travel, will be published by the University of Iowa Press early in 2009.

$14.00 (ISBN: 978-0-9798451-9-X)

David will be reading on Saturday, December 6, at the Canton Public Library. See the Poetry Calendar below.

DAVID LEFF in CANTON

The Price of Water is a collection of prose poems composed, according to the author, with an eye to those readers who may be suspicious of or put off by other, more regulated and often obscure forms of poetry. The poems in this collection are accessible in both form and content. David often writes about the natural world and about events which may start out sounding ordinary but quickly evolve into something newly seen and appreciated.

David’s essays and fiction have appeared in newspapers and magazines, and his non-fiction work The Last Undiscovered Place was a Connecticut Book Award finalist. Early in 2009, Deep Travel will be published by the University of Iowa Press.

ELIZABETH THOMAS in FARMINGTON

Elizabeth Thomas is a widely published poet, performer, advocate of the arts and educator. The author of three books of poetry, she has read her work throughout the United States. She is passionate about the work she does with young people, believing that writing and poetry is a way to unclench the fist that sometimes squeezes our hearts until we can no longer breathe. She left a well-paying corporate job 12 years ago to do the work she is now involved in and has never regretted the decision. Elizabeth’s most recent book, From the Front of the Classroom, is about her experiences teaching and designing writing programs for schools and other educational organizations. This book is ideal for teachers, students and parents alike.

BOB JACOB READING and book-signing

Bob Jacob’s book, Perspective, is a testament to the human spirit. Readers have been enthusiastic about the verse of a man who has dedicated himself to those most in need of what Jacob calls his loving words. Jean Valentine writes, “I admire Bob Jacob’s loving, tender voice valuing people close to death.” And Stephen Dunn has commented that the poems “reveal a man you’d like to know.” In 2004 a short selection of Jacob’s hospice poems, Upon Their Quiet Altars, was published. Like his full-length collection, the earlier book appeared under the aegis of The Connecticut Hospice, to which all proceeds of both books are being donated.

ARTSPEAK - A New Open Mike in Simsbury!

Peaberry’s Café of Simsbury is starting Artspeak, a poetry open mike on the fourth Saturday of every month hosted by Rob Dauphinais. We are hoping to generate interest in every corner of CT, so spread the word! The night will begin at 7:30 and go until 9:30, however, if there is an abundance of artists, we will go until 10:00. Our aim is to create an environment where poets of all ages will feel welcome and wanted, as well as challenged. We want this to be an atmosphere where artists can share and network, and, most importantly, grow!

All ages are welcome and we ask that each artist be sensitive to the audience and what may or may not be appropriate. Beyond this request, we want to keep censorship to a minimum, and we support freedom of speech and expression.

Artspeak will feature another experimental element, improvisational jazz. We’re interested in the marriage of poetry and music, words and rhythm. If you are a jazz musician interested in playing, please come! These events will be relatively fluid and open. Our desire is to cultivate a dialogue between the art of words and the art of music.

I have a notebook with me all the time, and I begin scribbling a few words. When things are going well, the walk does not get anywhere; I finally just stop and write.
– Mary Oliver

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality. But, of course, only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things.
– T.S. Eliot

Put your ear down close to your soul and listen hard.
– Anne Sexton

II:__POEM OF THE MONTH__________________________________

JOYS THAT SING

C.S. Lewis (1898 – 1963)

Oh doe not die, says Donne, for I shall hate
All women so. How false the sentence rings.
Women? But in a life made desolate
It is the joys once shared that have the stings.

To take the old walks alone, or not at all,
To order one pint where I ordered two,
To think of, and then not to make, the small
Time-honoured joke (senseless to all but you);

To laugh (oh, one’ll laugh), to talk upon
Themes that we talked upon when you were there,
To make some small pretense of going on,
Be kind to one’s old friends, and seem to care,

While no one (O God) through the years will say
The simplest, common word in just your way.

III:__BOOK OF THE MONTH_________________________________

Each month we highlight a book of poetry by a Connecticut author

LIT WINDOWPANE
by Suzanne Frischkorn

About Lit Windowpane, poet James Hoch wrote, “In a time when there is no greater question than the question of environmental survival, Suzanne Frischkorn’s Lit Windowpane reminds us of the necessity of unadorned and unapologetic praise for the natural world. In language spare and well-keeled, Frischkorn’s poems instill in the reader the kind of ‘perfect attentiveness’ that the poet Alan Shapiro reminds us is required for reading and loving. Here, in these wonderful poems, we see that attentiveness devoted to the frail and meteoric world through a gaze that is both outward and inward.”

In addition to Lit Windowpane, her first full-length book, Suzanne Frischkorn is the author of five chapbooks, most recently, American Flamingo and Spring Tide, selected by Mary Oliver for the Aldrich Poetry Award. Her poems have appeared in numerous literary journals and anthologies including Ecotone, Indiana Review, MARGIE, Poet Lore, and Conversation Pieces: Poems That Talk to Other Poems, part of the Everyman’s Library Pocket Series. She has served as an editor for Samsära Quarterly, is the recipient of the Aldrich Poetry Award, and last year received an Artist Fellowship from the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism.

From the introduction to Spring Tide, Mary Oliver wrote: “Suzanne Frischkorn’s poems are brisk and compelling. She writes as to a friend, or a stranger who might become a friend. The poems are extremely visual; the language is select and elegant, in the natural way a letter might reach elegance. The poem called Still Water begins ‘I want to tell you…’—a clear desire not only to express but to communicate. The poems are not home-spun by any means but exact, and exactly right, even at times beatific, so that we see what she sees as she sees it, which is pretty much, isn’t it, the poem’s intended accomplishment?”

$14.00 (ISBN: 978-1-59948-134-0)
Main Street Rag www.mainstreetrag.com

Suzanne will be reading on Thursday, November 20, at the Yale Bookstore. See the Poetry Calendar below.

IV:__WEBSITE OF THE MONTH______________________________

POETRY OUT LOUD
National Recitation Contest

From the web site: Recitation and performance are major new trends in poetry. There has been a recent resurgence of poetry as an oral art form, as seen in the slam poetry movement and the immense popularity of hip-hop music. Poetry Out Loud builds on that momentum by inviting the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into the English class.

The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with State Arts Agencies of the United States to support the expansion of Poetry Out Loud, which encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance. This exciting program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

MARY ANN HOBERMAN NAMED CHILDREN’S POET LAUREATE

Mary Ann Hoberman (born, by the way, in Stamford), a writer whose musical rhymes have captivated children for more than 50 years, was named the nation’s second Children’s Poet Laureate, a position that aims to raise the awareness of children’s natural receptivity to poetry, especially when it’s written specifically for them.

“Generations of readers who first discovered poetry in the books of Mary Ann Hoberman remember it not as a dry textbook encounter but as a moment of joyous play,” said John Barr, president of the Poetry Foundation, which sponsors the award. The honor is a two-year term and comes with a $25,000 cash prize. “Her poems tease young minds even as they please young ears with rhythm and rhyme. We honor her for a lifetime of writing poetry of lasting value for young readers.”

Hoberman, recipient of a National Book Award and the 2003 Poetry for Children Award of the National Council of Teachers of English, is the author of 45 books, all but one of which are in verse. Some of Hoberman’s best-known titles are A House Is a House for Me, The Seven Silly Eaters, and The Llama Who Had No Pajama, a collection of 100 of her favorite poems. Her verses have been widely anthologized and her books have been translated into several languages.

As laureate, Hoberman will give two major public readings for children and their families, teachers, and librarians. She will also serve as an advisor to the Poetry Foundation on children’s literature, and may engage in a variety of projects and events to help instill a love of poetry among the nation’s youngest readers. The Poetry Foundation made the appointment with input from a panel of experts in the field of children’s literature.

READERS’ THEATER
featuring Isidore Century, Sari Rosenblatt, and Lorence Gutterman

November is Jewish Book Month. In celebration and in conjunction with its annual Book and Chanukah Fair, Congregation Adath Israel proudly presents Readers’ Theater: lively presentations of new poetry and prose on Jewish themes, featuring New York City poet Isidore Century (reading from his first book-length collection, From the Coffee House of Jewish Dreamers); Middletown novelist Sari Rosenblatt (reading a selection of her novel-in-progress, Daughter of Retail); West Hartford poet Lorence Gutterman (who teaches creative writing to medical and nursing students in the Humanities Program at Yale University School of Medicine); Middletown journalist and radio host Richard Kamins (who is going to surprise us!), and more emerging voices of the Middletown Jewish community.

Hosted by Terri Klein. Admission is free for both the reading and the Fair (although, of course we’d love it if you decided to buy something at the Fair!). And with every two Jews you hear at Readers’ Theater, you get at least three opinions—such a bargain! And of course, there’ll be a cup of coffee and a piece of cake.

JIM KELLEHER reading and book-signing

Poet Jim Kelleher will read and sign his new book, Quarry. Kelleher, the everyman poet, has been writing poems for 30 years, using the small details of ordinary life to tell lyrical stories. He has published his work in journals that ordinary people read, including Yankee, The Christian Science Monitor, Fine Homebuilding, The Litchfield County Times, and The Mendocino Review. He is hoping to publish a second book, Mick, and spend less time banging nails and more time at the word processor.

Former United States Poet Laureate Maxine Kumin says Kelleher’s “tough, knobby poems” are crafted from what he knows as “carpenter, wood-splitter, snowplower.” Kelleher has worked all those jobs. He also taught in the Boston Public Schools and at CJR (The Connecticut Junior Republic) in Litchfield. He has owned and run Jim’s Fine Carpentry in the northwest corner of Connecticut for 20 years. In 2007 he received an MFA in Poetry from New England College, Henniker, N.H. He is presently an adjunct professor of English at Northwestern Connecticut Community College.

Come meet Jim Kelleher at a reception and book signing that will follow the reading. Copies of Quarry, an Antrim House Press publication, will be available for purchase for $15 and make ideal Christmas gifts. Refreshments will be served.
