I:__QUOTES________________________________________________

No one can write well if he does not believe what he is writing.
– Philip Larkin

What is the poem, after it is written? That is the question. Not where it came from or why.
– Allen Tate

At sixteen the poet reads Whitman and Homer and wants to be immortal. Alas, at twenty-four the same poet wants to be in The New Yorker.
– Donald Hall

II:__POEM OF THE MONTH__________________________________

AUTUMN

T. E. Hulme (1883 – 1917)

A touch of cold in the Autumn night—
I walked abroad,
And saw the ruddy moon lean over a hedge
Like a red-faced farmer.
I did not stop to speak, but nodded,
And round about were the wistful stars
With white faces like town children.

III:__BOOK OF THE MONTH_________________________________

Each month we highlight a book of poetry by a Connecticut author.

FROM THE FRONT OF THE CLASSROOM
by Elizabeth Thomas

In these wide-ranging poems taking us from her early life through some difficult later years and on to her life as wife, mother, grandmother, and most of all, teacher and advocate of poetry, Elizabeth Thomas reveals the rich inner life that has made her such an inspiration to everyone who knows her and has learned from her. It is characteristic of the poet that one of the commendations on her book’s back cover is by a former student, Alex Lopez: “Elizabeth has once again produced a work that is as beautiful as it is inspirational. In a culture that expects results from its educators, Elizabeth Thomas has found a way to make a unique connection in her book, as in her classroom.” Another tribute comes from an educator, Jeff Ostroff, Principal, Lyme-Old Lyme Middle School: “What distinguishes us as an educated society? I’d argue that it is our ability to create and appreciate art, communicate effectively with the spoken and written word, passionately embrace the beauty in our world, and confront its ugliness. The poems in this collection do all of that and more. They resonate with life so that the poet in all of us may sing.”

Elizabeth Thomas is a widely published poet, performer, advocate of the arts and teacher. The author of two previous poetry collections, she has read her work throughout the United States and has been a member of three Connecticut National Poetry Slam teams. In 1998 she was a member of the U.S. team that traveled to Sweden. Much of her energy and time is devoted to designing and teaching writing programs for schools and organizations in many parts of the country. As an outstanding advocate of youth in the arts, Elizabeth Thomas is a coach and organizer with Brave New Voices: International Youth Poetry Slam and Festival. She is also the founder of UpWords Poetry, a company dedicated to promoting programs for young writers and educators. She hosts a website at www.upwordspoetry.com.

IV:__WEBSITE OF THE MONTH______________________________

THE POETRY FOUNDATION

Whether you enjoy the magazine Poetry or not, this web site is loaded. They have an extensive Audio section, though many of the poems are not read by the poet. Look for entries labeled Poetry Lectures; those are quite good. There's an interesting section called Poetry Tool which allows you to search for poems and poets in a variety of ways. There's even a Books page that lists the top selling poetry books (currently Ballistics by Billy Collins). Reading Guides, Videos, Links, and more, it's worth a visit.

From the website: The Poetry Foundation, publisher of Poetry magazine, is an independent literary organization committed to a vigorous presence for poetry in our culture. It exists to discover and celebrate the best poetry and to place it before the largest possible audience.

Upon receipt of a major gift from philanthropist Ruth Lilly, the Poetry Foundation was established in 2003, evolving from the Modern Poetry Association, which was founded in 1941. The Poetry Foundation is one of the largest literary foundations in the world.

MICHAEL CERVAS in AVON

A poetry reading will be held at the Avon Free Public Library with local poet, Michael Cervas, reading from his latest work, Inside the Box: Poems. Mr. Cervas is on the faculty of Westminster School in Simsbury.

Michael Cervas' first collection of poetry, Inside the Box, is a stunning book and has been greeted with enthusiasm by all who have seen advance copies. Naomi Shihab Nye says, "I feel haunted and deepened in all ways as a reader by this book. The poems are well-shaped, penetrating, insightful, unexpected, eerie and haunting at times, always resonant and richly layered. Their humor rings and delights." Linda Peterson adds, "A joy to read...these poems give pleasure and insight." And David Huddle writes, "These poems are a civilizing force!"

BOB JACOB in BLOOMFIELD

Bob Jacob reading and book-signing. Free & open to the public.

Bob Jacob's book, Perspective, is a testament to the human spirit. Readers have been enthusiastic about the verse of a man who has dedicated himself to those most in need of what Jacob calls his loving words. Jean Valentine writes, "I admire Bob Jacob's loving, tender voice valuing people close to death." And Stephen Dunn has commented that the poems "reveal a man you'd like to know." In 2004 a short selection of Jacob's hospice poems, Upon Their Quiet Altars, was published. Like his full-length collection, the earlier book appeared under the aegis of The Connecticut Hospice, to which all proceeds of both books are being donated.

13th ANNUAL WALLACE STEVENS BIRTHDAY BASH
with featured speaker John N. Serio

Serio (bio below) will address a neglected aspect in Wallace Stevens' work—"the personal" or "the emotional" in his poetry. Most readers focus on Stevens' complex philosophical ideas and find his poetry abstract, cold, and impersonal. His talk will concentrate on the feeling embedded in Stevens' poetry.

Reception begins at 6:30pm.
After Program: serving Birthday Cake and Champagne!

Hartford Public Library
500 Main Street
Hartford CT

Ticket: $40 per person; send check payable to: Hartford Public Library. Or call to reserve your tickets at the door: 860-695-6360.

John N. Serio is a Professor of Humanities at Clarkson University, where he has taught since 1974. A specialist in modern American poetry and Wallace Stevens in particular, he has edited The Wallace Stevens Journal for over twenty-five years. Among his publications are Wallace Stevens: An Annotated Secondary Bibliography; Teaching Wallace Stevens: Practical Essays; The Cambridge Companion to Wallace Stevens. He has edited two collections of Poetry for Young People, Wallace Stevens and The Seasons. Serio created a searchable CD of the first twenty-five years of The Wallace Stevens Journal, including the rarely seen Wallace Stevens Newsletter. With Greg Foster, he created a free Online Concordance to Wallace Stevens poetry at www.wallacestevens.com.

He has been the recipient of several NEH grants as well as two Fulbright awards, one to Greece and one to Belgium. He has received recognition for his scholarly articles and his journal editing. In Spring 2005, he taught in the "Semester at Sea" program, a university on a ship that circumnavigates the globe, and will do so again in Spring 2009.

Sponsored by Connecticut Center for the Book at the Hartford Public Library with help from The Friends & Enemies of Wallace Stevens.

THE POET'S VOICE SERIES
presents Marie Howe in Westport

Marie Howe is author of The Good Thief, which was selected by Margaret Atwood for the National Poetry Series, What the Living Do, and the co-editor of a book of essays, In the Company of My Solitude: American Writing from the AIDS Pandemic. Her third volume of poetry, Kingdom Of Ordinary Time is forthcoming. Her poems have appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and other magazines. She is the recipient of NEA and Guggenheim Fellowships, and Stanley Kunitz selected her for a Lavan Younger Poets Prize from the American Academy of Poets. Currently, Howe teaches creative writing at Sarah Lawrence College, Columbia, and New York University.

About The Good Thief, Margaret Atwood said, "Marie Howe's poetry doesn't fool around...these poems are intensely felt, sparely expressed, and difficult to forget; poems of obsession that transcend their own dark roots."

This reading is part of the Poet’s Voice series, an annual event, which brings notable poets to Fairfield County libraries and the community. It is supported by the Horace E. Manacher Poetry Fund. The reading is free and open to all.

CALLING ALL POETS
presents Cheryl Della Pelle and Sandra Bishop Ebner

Because of the sparked interest and great turn out at last April’s poetry celebration, the Silas Bronson Library has decided to go ahead with their own series. “Calling All Poets” will be a place in which all participants will have an opportunity to hear other poets as well as express their own voice through poetry. Participants are invited to bring original poems and/or other favorites to share in fitting with October’s open mike theme, “Ladies night out” - a Celebration of Women. 6:00pm sign up.

The reading will be held downstairs. Admission is free. Hosted by Victoria Muñoz.

Cheryl Della Pelle will read from and sign her new book, Down to the Waters. The book tells the story of one woman's search for herself and for the sort of fulfillment that comes only to those who refuse to settle for less than everything. She founded Common Thread, a poetry performance group who has their permanent residence at the Artwell Gallery in Torrington and performs several times a year, besides her work as a visiting poet in the public schools. She also has poems published in Arkenstone and The Connecticut River Review.

Sandra Bishop Ebner is an RN who works as a psychiatric case manager for a VNS. Her poems have appeared in various literary journals. Her first book, The Space Between, was published by Hanover Press in 2000. She was recently published in The Poetry of Nursing, poems and commentary by leading nurse poets, published by Kent State University Press.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT POETRY SERIES
featuring Cheryl Panosian-Haddad

Psychologist, poet, wife, mother of daughters. Cheryl has been a long-time participant in the Wednesday Night Poetry Series since the time it met at Doctor Java's Caffeine Emporium around 1995. Her poetry builds on her Armenian heritage and on strong family themes. Her work is serious but she has a sense of humor: she was the winner of the first WNPS Halloween Poetry Costume contest, when she read Sylvia Plath's work costumed in a giant cardboard oven.

BOB JACOB READING and BOOK-SIGNING

Bob Jacob's book, Perspective, is a testament to the human spirit. Readers have been enthusiastic about the verse of a man who has dedicated himself to those most in need of what Jacob calls his loving words. Jean Valentine writes, "I admire Bob Jacob's loving, tender voice valuing people close to death." And Stephen Dunn has commented that the poems "reveal a man you’d like to know." In 2004 a short selection of Jacob’s hospice poems, Upon Their Quiet Altars, was published. Like his full-length collection, the earlier book appeared under the aegis of The Connecticut Hospice, to which all proceeds of both books are being donated.

ARTSPEAK - A New Open Mike in Simsbury!

Peaberry’s Café of Simsbury is starting Artspeak, a poetry open mike on the fourth Saturday of every month hosted by Rob Dauphinais. We are hoping to generate interest in every corner of CT, so spread the word! The night will begin at 7:30 and go until 9:30, however, if there is an abundance of artists, we will go until 10:00. Our aim is to create an environment where poets of all ages will feel welcome and wanted, as well as challenged. We want this to be an atmosphere where artists can share and network, and, most importantly, grow!

All ages are welcome and we ask that each artist be sensitive to the audience and what may or may not be appropriate. Beyond this request, we want to keep censorship to a minimum, and we support freedom of speech and expression.

Artspeak will feature another experimental element, improvisational jazz. We’re interested in the marriage of poetry and music, words and rhythm. If you are a jazz musician interested in playing, please come! These events will be relatively fluid and open. Our desire is to cultivate a dialogue between the art of words and the art of music.
