I:__QUOTES________________________________________________

At the touch of love everyone becomes a poet.
– Plato

Poetry is indispensable—if I only knew what for.
– Jean Cocteau

Poetry is the language in which man explores his own amazement..
– Christopher Fry

II:__POEM OF THE MONTH_________________________________

SYMPTOMS OF LOVE

Robert Graves (1895 - 1985)

Love is a universal migraine,
A bright stain on the vision
Blotting out reason.

Symptoms of true love
Are leanness, jealousy,
Laggard dawns;

Are omens and nightmares –
Listening for a knock,
Waiting for a sign:

For a touch of her fingers
In a darkened room,
For a searching look.

Take courage, lover!
Could you endure such pain
At any hand but hers?

III:__BOOK OF THE MONTH________________________________

Each month we highlight a book of poetry by a Connecticut author.

PERENNIALS: NEW& SELECTED POEMS
by Eileen Albrizio

Albrizio is a recipient of the 2008 New Boston Fund Individual Artist Fellowship. Perennials marks Albrizio's fourth collection of poetry. Her previous books include Messy on the Inside and Rain - Dark as Water in Winter. In 2003, she produced On the Edge, a recitation of poems
on CD, made possible by a Poetry Fellowship from the Greater Hartford Arts Council. In 2005, Albrizio left a twelve-year, award-winning career as a radio news host and broadcast journalist to pursue a life of writing and teaching. Nine of those years were spent working for National Public Radio and its Connecticut affiliate, WNPR. She has taught creative writing in several colleges and cultural institutions as well as the York Correctional Institute, Connecticut’s only maximum-security prison for women.

"A lasting, memorable effect on the mind of the reader." - Ravi Shankar: editor of Drunken Boat, author of Instrumentality, finalist for the 2005 CT Book Awards.

"I enthusiastically recommend." - Reggie Marra: author of This Open Eye: Seeing What We Do, and Living Poems, Writing Lives: Spirit, Self and the Art of Poetry

IV:__WEB SITE OF THE MONTH____________________________

POETRY ON YOUTUBE

YouTube was founded on Valentine's Day in 2005 and in three years has become a worldwide phenomenon. Every day, millions of people visit the site to view the staggering volume and variety of videos. What sort of numbers are we talking about? The most watched video of all time is "Evolution of Dance," a dance routine by comedian Judson Laipply, which it has been viewed over 73 million times.

In fact, the company name itself, YouTube, is quickly entering the lexicon—as a verb. In Jan 2007, The American Dialect Society voted "YouTube"—used as a verb—winner of the "Most Likely to Succeed" category in their 2006 Word of the Year Awards.

Among the millions of video clips are many videos of poets and poetry readings. Search for and check out the dozens of "animated poetry" videos. Or search "slam poetry" and watch
poets who seem to have been born for YouTube-length videos. Try searching for your favorite poet by name. Or just search "reading a poem" or "poetry reading" and see what you get.

And while you're there, check out "Evolution of Dance." Very funny.
