I:__QUOTES________________________________________________

I try every day to write great poetry—as I tried when I was 14. What else is there to do?
– Donald Hall

The longer I live, the more I see there’s something about reciting rhythmical words aloud—it’s almost biological—that comforts and enlivens human beings.
– Robert Pinsky

A perfect poem speaks the world into existence.
– Terri Klein

II:__POEM OF THE MONTH__________________________________

THE VOICE

Thomas Hardy (1840 - 1928)
Woman much missed, how you call to me, call to me,
Saying that now you are not as you were
When you had changed from the one who was all to me,
But as at first, when our day was fair.
Can it be you that I hear? Let me view you, then,
Standing as when I drew near to the town
Where you would wait for me: yes, as I knew you then,
Even to the original air-blue gown!
Or is it only the breeze, in its listlessness
Traveling across the wet mead to me here,
You being ever dissolved to wan wistlessness,
Heard no more again far or near?
    Thus I; faltering forward,
Leaves around me falling,
Wind oozing thin through the thorn from norward,
And the woman calling.

III:__BOOK OF THE MONTH_________________________________

Each month we highlight a book of poetry by a Connecticut author.

SILK FIST SONGS
by Marilyn E. Johnston

Reviewers of Marilyn Johnston’s first poetry collection, Silk Fist Songs, have been enthusiastic.

Clare Rossini said, “How is it that death, its brutal emptying out, provokes our ripest understandings; that grief, like poetic form, conditions and frees the heart into song? These are the mysteries at the heart of Marilyn Johnston’s beautifully realized collection, which was begotten in the loss of a father and brother. But how much life is in these poems, in their depiction of family, of childhood memory, of evolving love.”

For his part, Doug Anderson commented, “Marilyn Johnston’s poems are written exactly where feeling becomes language, as if conceived in that moment just before sleep when we let down our guard and open to our own wholeness. They are beautifully crafted, but even more importantly, the poet has been relentless in her avoidance of the false note. These poems are true, and human, and ones you’ll want to live with. This is a very strong first book.”

Marilyn E. Johnston’s poetry has received five Pushcart Prize nominations and has appeared in numerous literary journals including The Worcester Review, Atlanta Review, South Carolina Review, and Poet Lore. Her chapbook Against Disappearance was published as finalist for the 2001 Redgreene Press Poetry Prize. Commitments to poetry and to community have led her to work in the Bloomfield Public Library, where she directs a poetry series presenting area writers to an ever-expanding audience.

“IMAGERY AND MEMORY”
A poetry writing workshop with Geri Radacsi

Imagery and Memory come together in a new poetry writing workshop offered by Millrace Books in Farmington. Re-discover memories and shape them into poetry to share with family, fellow writers, or to publish in a journal. The use of images and image-making in contemporary poetry will be discussed from four perspectives: portraits of the self and others; developing voice; narrative; and poetry of place. Through directed writing exercises and constructive critiques in a supportive workshop setting, we will write about life experiences, personal views and observations transforming them through form and language. Turn your memories into creative poems.

Farmington, CT
860-677-9662

Geri Radacsi is the author of three collections of poetry: a prize-winning chapbook, Ancient Music; her first full-length poetry collection, Trapped in Amber; and her most recent collection, Tightrope Walker. Among her publishing credits are The Atlanta Review, Comstock Review, Connecticut Review, MacGuffin, and Nimrod, among others. She has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, is the 2003 winner of the Connecticut River Review Poetry Prize, and has won several awards from the Connecticut Poetry Society.

THE SUNKEN GARDEN POETRY FESTIVAL IS BACK!

The summer-long Sunken Garden Poetry Festival returns this summer to Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington following a one-year hiatus. Jeffrey Levine, poet, publisher, and teacher, has assumed the role of Artistic Director for the 16th season of the Festival, which will include some of the most talented poets and musicians in the country.

In June, the festival kicks off with Robert Pinsky on the 11th, followed by the Connecticut Poetry Circuit Winners and Coleman Barks on the 26th. Over the course of the summer, the scheduled poets include such brand names as Billy Collins and Paul Muldoon and, as always, the Night Of Fresh Voices. (Check out the Summer Performance Series page on the web site for all upcoming readings.) There will also be music at each event, too; the format will be mixed: some evenings, poetry and music will be separate, other evenings they will be interspersed, such as when Coleman Barks reads Rumi accompanied by cellist Eugene Friesen.

CT POET SHAME AWARD

This month, a CT Poet Shame award goes to the International Festival of Arts & Ideas in New Haven which—again—has no scheduled poetry readings. Film? Theatre? Dance? Music? Visual Art? Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Poetry? No. No name poets, no local poets, no slams, no open mikes, nothing. Robert Pinsky will speak on the 15th, but it’s a lecture not a poetry reading. Paul Muldoon will be there, too, but he’ll be discussing contemporary Irish literature. And those are the only events that even hint of poetry. On the web site, if you click on the poetry category you’ll see events such as plays, dance performances, even a Rosanne Cash concert listed—but no poetry.

I only hope there will be at least one street poet who, standing alone on a corner, will bark out a few lines against the wall of ears. For all of us.

for no apparent planetary reason save the motion
of a Blue Moon and the Red Dwarf Stars...”

In the 1950s a number of Beat poets discovered Buddhism. Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, Joanne Kyger, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and others explored Buddhism in their writing. They adopted their own variety of Buddhism, one that fit within their bohemian lifestyle and called it “beat” Buddhism. Philip Whalen became the most serious practitioner, becoming a Zen Buddhist monk in 1973. During this reading, local poets will read samples of Buddhist-inspired Beat poetry and also from their own Beat-inspired works.

Touchstone is a residential treatment facility in Litchfield—a place for healing, for learning to take responsibility for one’s own choices, for developing an awareness of what those choices might be. Come and give these young women an audience for their unforgettable work. Our award-winning poetry anthology, I Am Not A Juvenile Delinquent, will be on sale, and alumnae will also be present to read work they’ve written since being out in the world again.

Touchstone is a residential program serving girls committed to the Department of Children and Families. For eight years, family therapist Sharon Charde has volunteered at Touchstone developing and administering a creative writing program there. I Am Not A Juvenile Delinquent, a book of their poetry, edited by Ms. Charde won the PASS award from the National Council on Crime and Delinquency. Jon Baskin, a filmmaker from New York, made a 22-minute documentary about the program. To read a sample poem or view the Jon Baskin film trailer, click here.

This evening the usual order will be reversed: The featured poets will read first at 8:00pm, followed by the open mike.

What may be most surprising in Perspective, which is a book full of surprises, is the amount of joy, laughter, last-minute insight, and utter honesty shown by the hospice patients so clearly and lovingly depicted here. Bob Jacob’s poems also praise the dedication of the nurses and others who make The Connecticut Hospice such a place of refuge. The book is a testament to the human spirit. Readers have been enthusiastic about the verse of a man who has dedicated himself to those most in need of what Jacob calls his loving words. Jean Valentine writes, “I admire Bob Jacob’s loving, tender voice valuing people close to death.” And Stephen Dunn has commented that the poems “reveal a man you’d like to know.” In 2004 a short selection of Jacob’s hospice poems, “Upon Their Quiet Altars,” was published. Like this full-length collection, the earlier book appeared under the aegis of The Connecticut Hospice, to which all proceeds of both books are being donated.

ARTSPEAK - A New Open Mike in Simsbury!

Peaberry’s Café of Simsbury is starting Artspeak, a poetry open mike on the fourth Saturday of every month hosted by Rob Dauphinais. We are hoping to generate interest in every corner of CT, so spread the word! The night will begin at 7:30 and go until 9:30, however, if there is an abundance of artists, we will go until 10:00. Our aim is to create an environment where poets of all ages will feel welcome and wanted, as well as challenged. We want this to be an atmosphere where artists can share and network, and, most importantly, grow!

All ages are welcome and we ask that each artist be sensitive to the audience and what may or may not be appropriate. Beyond this request, we want to keep censorship to a minimum, and we support freedom of speech and expression.

Artspeak will feature another experimental element, improvisational jazz. We’re interested in the marriage of poetry and music, words and rhythm. If you are a jazz musician interested in playing, please come! These events will be relatively fluid and open. Our desire is to cultivate a dialogue between the art of words and the art of music.
