I:__QUOTES________________________________________________

Poetry lies its way to the truth.
– John Ciardi

Nobody has ever measured, not even poets, how much the human heart can hold.
– Zelda Fitzgerald

Poetry is a means of exchange, a form of reciprocity, a magic to be shared, a gift. There has never been a civilization without it.
– Edward Hirsch

II:__POEM OF THE MONTH_________________________________

WHEN I AM DEAD AND SISTER TO THE DUST

Elsa Barker (1869 - 1954)

When I am dead and sister to the dust;
When no more avidly I drink the wine
Of human love; when the pale Proserpine
Has covered me with poppies, and cold rust
Has cut my lyre-strings, and the sun has thrust
Me underground to nourish the world-vine,—
Men shall discover these old songs of mine,
And say: This woman lived—as poets must!

This woman lived and wore life as a sword
To conquer wisdom; this dead woman read
In the sealed Book of Love and underscored
The meanings. Then the sails of faith she spread,
And faring out for regions unexplored,
Went singing down the River of the Dead.

III:__BOOK OF THE MONTH________________________________

Each month we highlight a book of poetry by a Connecticut author.

INSIDE THE BOX
by Michael Cervas

Antrim House is pleased to announce the publication of Inside the Box, the first collection of poetry by Michael Cervas. It is a stunning book and has been greeted with enthusiasm by all who have seen advance copies. Naomi Shihab Nye says, “I feel haunted and deepened in all ways as a reader by this book. The poems are well-shaped, penetrating, insightful, unexpected, eerie and haunting at times, always resonant and richly layered. Their humor rings and delights.” Linda Peterson adds, “A joy to read. From his reflections on childhood to his Wordsworthian meditations on nature to his playful thoughts about the game of squash as a metaphor for life, these poems give pleasure and insight.” David Huddle writes, “These poems are a civilizing force! ”

Born and raised in Pittsburgh and educated at the University of Notre Dame and Brown University, Michael Cervas came late to the writing of poetry. Decades into a teaching career, he began writing poems in his mid-forties, partly as a way of encouraging his students to take creative writing seriously. A sabbatical year in 2006 allowed him to devote himself more fully to his own writing and to revise earlier work, as a result his poems have begun to appear in journals and magazines throughout the country. As his poems attest, Michael’s extra-literary interests include gardening, cooking, jazz, and sports, especially that most poetic of all sports, squash. Together with his wife, Deborah, and his daughter, Anne, Michael lives in Simsbury, Connecticut on the campus of Westminster School, where he teaches English and directs the Westminster Poetry Series.

$18.00 (ISBN: 978-0-9792226-3-4)

IV:__WEB SITE OF THE MONTH____________________________

POETIC FORMS AND TERMINOLOGY

A nice list of links to sites with descriptions and examples of various poetic forms, including most western and Asian-inspired forms. Useful for those who want to try writing in form and want to know the finer points; and also useful for those who run from form as if it's a radioactive prison cell.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT POETRY SERIES
featuring "So, What's New?" - 3 featurettes

"So, What's New?" - 3 featurettes, will read poetry that was
a part of a new movement that somehow expanded the poetic
universe. We will also ask Open Mike readers to somehow
address the concept of new--hopefully by not just reading a
new poem, but a poem that takes them in a new direction, or
adding something they've never done before in their reading.
If they have never sung in public, this is a time to try. If they
usually stand still while reading, try reading while jumping,
or running in place. Bring a prop. It's a new year! Expand!

WALT WHITMAN DISCUSSED in WALLINGFORD
New poetry program: "Four American Poets"

This series will explore the work of four American writers
whose poetry is testimony to the timelessness of literature
and the creative process. Walt Whitman and Emily Dickin-
son, the giants of nineteenth-century American poetry, have
exerted a tremendous influence on succeeding generations
of poets. Though vastly different in style and technique,
they have much in common in terms of what accounts for
their ongoing preeminence in the pantheon of American liter-
ature. Billy Collins and Mary Oliver are two contemporary
poets whose work has achieved great critical acclaim as
well as a large and loyal readership. While speaking directly
to modern audiences, their poetry is part of a tradition that
can be traced back to their illustrious predecessors.

Though presented as independent discussions of each poet,
the four-part series will also touch on themes common to
all that illustrate their shared relationship in the landscape
of American poetry.

David Garnes will lead all four discussions on Tuesdays
2:00-3:30pm, every other week, starting with Walt Whit-
man's Leaves of Grass on Jan 22. Multiple copies of the
books are available at the library. To register, please call
